The History of Intel Processors And Their Journey

To delve deeper into the world of Intel processors it's worth exploring their history and remarkable journey. Established in 1968 by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce Intel initially made waves with its random access memory (DRAM) chip as its debut product. However, it was in 1971 that they revolutionized the industry with the release of their microprocessor, known as the Intel 4004. This groundbreaking 4 bit processor found its applications across early calculators and devices.

Building upon this success Intel introduced the acclaimed Intel 8080 in 1974. An 8 bit processor that found its place within the first personal computers ever manufactured. The subsequent years witnessed advancements with releases like the Intel 8086 in 1978 and the Intel 80286 in 1982. These processors played roles not only within IBM PCs but also across other popular personal computers of that era.

Back in 1985, Intel unveiled the Intel 80386 a 32 bit processor that found its way into the Windows PCs. It wasn't long before the 80386 gave way to the Intel 80486 in 1989 followed by the Intel Pentium in 1993. The Pentium processor marked a leap forward in CPU design and performance being the first to smoothly run Windows 95.

As we ventured into the late '90s and early '00s Intel introduced a series of Pentium processors that included the likes of Pentium II, Pentium III, and Pentium 4. These powerful processors played a role in driving mainstream desktop PCs and laptops.

Fast forward to 2006 when Intel unleashed its Core 2 Duo processor onto the market, this dual core marvel brought about performance enhancements compared to its predecessors from the Pentium series. Following suit were released, like Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors which power today's cutting edge desktop PCs, laptops, and servers.

Main Intel Processor Families

Over the years Intel has introduced a lot of different types of processors and divided them into various categories as mentioned above. Let’s take a look at the 3 most renowned families of the Intel CPUs.

  1. Intel Core processors: Intel Core processors are the most popular Intel processors for desktop PCs and laptops. They offer a wide range of performance and features, making them suitable for a variety of users.
  2. Intel Xeon processors: Intel Xeon processors are designed for servers and workstations. They offer high performance and reliability, making them ideal for demanding tasks such as virtualization and data processing.
  3. Intel Atom processors: Intel Atom processors are low-power processors that are designed for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. They offer good performance while consuming very little power.
